Introduction
———

CMC Series (CMC-LV / CMC-HV) is a DongYU technical-grade sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) line for water-based drilling fluids (WBM).
Compared with conventional fluid-loss additives, DongYU CMC Series is designed to provide reliable filtration control in freshwater and seawater systems, while offering two rheology options to match hydraulics and hole-cleaning requirements.

The series provides CMC-LV (low viscosity build) and CMC-HV (viscosity-building) options to balance fluid-loss control, pumpability, and suspension.
CMC is less effective in brines / high-salinity saltwater, and is not generally recommended when salinity exceeds 50,000 ppm unless laboratory testing confirms performance. As a cellulose polymer, CMC may be subject to bacterial degradation; a suitable biocide is recommended to prevent fermentation. Where drilling cement is anticipated, CMC-treated systems are commonly pretreated with sodium bicarbonate and/or citric acid prior to drilling cement (field practice dependent).

Applications / Functions

  • Fluid-loss control in freshwater and seawater WBM systems

  • LV advantage: controls filtration with minimal viscosity build for pumpability and stable hydraulics / low ECD

  • HV function: builds viscosity to improve suspension and cuttings transport / hole cleaning

  • May help deflocculate some seawater muds when used at low concentrations (system dependent)

 For brines and very high salinity: performance may decrease (verification recommended; not generally recommended > 50,000 ppm)

Recommended Treatment
—————

Typical dosage (optimize based on solids, salinity and target filtration):

  • Freshwater: 0.5–1.5 ppb

  • Seawater: 2–3 ppb

Add slowly through a mixing hopper to ensure proper dispersion and hydration (e.g., 10–20 min/sack).

For bacterial risk, use a biocide to prevent fermentation. For cement-related operations, consider sodium bicarbonate / citric acid pretreatment prior to drilling cement (field practice dependent).
