Introduction

SMC is a sulfonated lignite (humic-acid derivative) designed for water-based drilling fluids (WBM).
It functions primarily as a thinner / viscosity reducer while providing supporting filtration-loss control, helping stabilize rheology and improve overall fluid performance.
SMC is suitable for high-temperature operations up to ≤220°C (≤428°F), and is commonly applied to improve mud behavior in demanding intervals (final performance depends on the system and should be verified by lab testing).
